Pavers Shenton Park: Fellstyle Natural Stone for Alfresco, Paths & Steps

We supply pavers to Shenton Park and its surrounding areas in Western Australia.

This recent paving installation demonstrates what’s possible with the right natural stone and a skilled installer. We supplied Fellstyle quartzitic sandstone pavers and Corten steel garden edging for a comprehensive rear garden project completed by Jol, one of our endorsed installers.

The Project

This Shenton Park property required paving across several connected areas at the rear: a verandah running the full width of the house, an alfresco area extending from it, a path leading from the rear gate, and a set of steps with risers. We supplied all materials; installation was carried out by an endorsed installer to ensure correct substrate preparation and wet-lay technique throughout.

Using one paver consistently across all areas was a deliberate choice. The verandah flows into the alfresco without a material change, the path uses the same stone, and the steps carry it through to the gate. The result feels considered rather than assembled from separate decisions.

Before, During & After

Prior to the works, the rear of the property lacked cohesion, with bare ground, no defined path from the gate, and an unfinished outdoor living area that didn’t reflect the quality of the home.

Substrate preparation and correct base compaction are critical for natural stone, particularly in areas subject to foot traffic and adjacent to established garden beds.

The completed installation transforms the rear garden. The verandah and alfresco read as one continuous outdoor living area, the path gives clear purpose and direction from the gate, and the steps integrate naturally with the level changes in the garden.

About Fellstyle

Fellstyle is a quartzitic sandstone, denser and harder than standard sandstone, with consistent neutral light-grey tones and a naturally textured surface. It is one of our most popular pavers and for good reason – the colour is versatile, the stone is tough, and it performs well across a wide range of applications.

Available in three sizes (1140×570mm, 855×570mm, and 570×570mm), all calibrated to 22mm thickness, Fellstyle can be laid in a single size or mixed for a more varied pattern. Project packs are available for those wanting a multi-format layout.

Why Fellstyle Works for Shenton Park

Shenton Park is an inner-western suburb of established character. The housing stock ranges from original 1930s and 40s homes through to post-war cottages and carefully renovated contemporaries. Many properties have large, mature gardens with trees, brick detailing, and a sense of permanence.

Fellstyle suits this environment well. The grey-neutral palette works with brick, render, timber, and painted surfaces without competing. It doesn’t impose itself on the setting, it sits comfortably within it, which is exactly what a quality natural stone paver should do in an established garden.

The Verandah & Alfresco Area

The verandah runs the full width of the rear of the property and transitions directly into the alfresco area. Paving both in the same stone and at the same level removes any unnecessary break between the two zones — the covered area and the open outdoor living space read as one.

For outdoor entertaining and alfresco areas in particular, Fellstyle is an excellent choice. The surface handles outdoor furniture, foot traffic, and the general demands of family use. It’s also straightforward to keep clean, a brush and occasional wash is all it needs.

The Rear Path

The path runs from the rear gate to the back of the property, giving clear, practical access whilst sitting naturally within the garden. Rather than treating the path as a secondary element, the same Fellstyle pavers used for the main outdoor areas were carried through here.

This consistency pays off visually. The path doesn’t look like an afterthought, it looks like part of the same project, which it is.

Steps & Risers

The steps were formed using the same flat Fellstyle pavers as the rest of the installation, maintaining consistency throughout the project. The natural texture of the stone provides reliable footing on the treads, and the clean flat edges of each step give the structure a solid, unfussy appearance.

Corten Steel Edging

Alongside the paving, Country Earth supplied Corten steel FormBoss garden edging to define the boundary between the paved areas and the adjacent garden beds. The warm rust tones of weathering steel complement the grey-neutral palette of Fellstyle well, and the clean steel line gives the garden beds a precise edge that holds mulch and soil in place.
